Livelihoods Approaches to Bridging the Rural Digital Divide (FAO/ODI/DfID)

The Bridging the Rural Digital Divide Programme draws on the concepts embodied in “Livelihoods Approaches” to sustainable development, a set of general programme guidelines focusing on a people-centred, holistic analysis of the diverse and dynamic needs and assets of all stakeholders. An important consideration of the programmes is to support the links from macro level (policies and institutions) to micro level (communities and individuals).

FAO conducted studies jointly with the UK Department for International Development (DFID) and the Overseas Development Institute (ODI) in order to determine the key issues that need to be addressed when applying the Livelihoods Approach in interventions to enhance the impact of information and communication for development (ICD).

A principal activity in the Programme is a continuing analysis and reappraisal of these issues for ICD initiatives, as derived from the joint studies. At this time, eight critical success factors are recognized:

5. Ensuring Equitable Access and Empowerment

6. Building Partnership Networks

7. Adopting Realistic Approaches to Technology
