Mobiles4Dev: A UNICEF commissioned reasearch project to understand the global mobile telephony landscape for development
Source: Commonwealth Telecommunications Organisation (CTO)

The Mobiles4Dev project was a research study commissioned by UNICEF to help the organisation and other development organisations understand the global mobile telephony landscape as it currently relates to advancing development, and as an area of significant future opportunities. Evidence for the report was gained during in-depth consultations with UNICEF operational staff, representatives of mobile operators in 14 Case Study countries and thought leaders in both mobiles for development and the mobile industry.
The 14 Case Study countries were Bangladesh, Egypt, Ghana, Iraq, Kosovo, Lao PDR, Malawi, Mongolia, Philippines, Sierra Leone, Sri Lanka, Suriname, Uganda and Zambia. Analysis of these countries produced, amongst other things, evidence about key drivers and barriers to the development and use of mobile applications, content and services for development. It also enabled the team to develop a live listing of almost 200 M4D applications, services, content and initiatives from across the 14 countries.
Some of those were further examined as part of the M4D Case Studies report, which contains 10 in-depth M4D Case Studies, highlighting some of the most innovative and potentially beneficial M4D initiatives.
