Utilization of Mobile Phones as a Communication Channel in Fish Marketing Enterprise among Fishmongers in Western Nigeria’s Kainji Lake Basin

[Knowledge base]
Ifejika and al (2009) studied the impact of mobile phones for fishmongers in Western Nigeria’s Kainji Lake Basin. The study shows the important use of mobile in the circulation of information through fishers, customers but also to control prices. Indeed, more than half of the fishmongers possess their own mobile phone, 53% use it to contact fishers, 48% to contact customers and 19% to control prices. It is important to remember that these statistics are from 2008 and that the 2008 penetration rate of mobile phone in Nigeria was about 41.6% according to AfricaNext (2009). The trend is quite clear among this fishmonger population, which made use of ICTs more than the rest of the population by a third.
