SELF-IDENTIFICATION Be identifiable. Please include your name and organization (if any) at the end of your message. Messages without this information will not be posted; SUBSCRIBE/UNSUBSCRIBE To receive messages from an e-Agriculture Forum category in your email inbox, click 'Profile' at the top of the Forum page, and under the 'Forum Preferences' section that will appear at the bottom of the page, click the boxes for the Forum topics to which you would like to subscribe. To unsubscribe, uncheck the boxes. FLAMING Flaming means posting angry or insulting messages on the Forum. While lively debate is encouraged, at times people can get out of hand and offend one another. This can lead to anger, frustration, and hurt feelings. We hope participants will make every effort to be careful of the feelings of others. Postings that the moderators feel contain personal attacks on members will be deleted from the Forum, and offenders will be warned and, if repeat offenses occur, possibly banned. We hope this is never necessary. QUOTING FROM A MESSAGE IN A REPLY When you respond to a message, please try not to quote too much of the message, keeping only the parts of the original message needed to let people know what you are replying to. If quoting is excessive and/or redundant, moderators may delete prior message quotes or return the message to the author for modification. SUBJECT LINES There will often be a large number of messages posted to the e-Agriculture forum. Not everyone is interested in everything posted, so it will be appreciated if members will try to state the subject of their post clearly in their Subject: lines, so that readers will know what their posts are about and whether they are interested in them. If you change the direction of a conversation, be sure to change the subject line to reflect the new topic. Thanks. REPRINTS, ANNOUNCEMENTS and ADVERTISING Sometimes messages are posted to online forums that are obviously advertisements. While naturally many relevant posts may alert the community to websites, books, and resources created by members, moderators will use their discretion to decide what is acceptable, and may remove some posts that are more promotional than relevant. The purpose of the forum is generally discussion, rather than announcements or promotion. Material reprinted from other sources may not be accepted on this list due to possible copyright issues. This will be at moderator's discretion. One possible solution for posters is to include links to the original source of material to which they would like to alert the community. CONTENT AND LANGUAGE Postings submitted to the English list should be in English. Messages posted to this list not in English will be returned to the author or deleted. The e-Agriculture community includes thousands of people from all over the world and represents great diversity in cultures, experiences, and interests. The content and language used in messages should reflect an appreciation of this diversity, and the possibility that messages may be interpreted differently by different audiences. LENGTH Please keep messages under 3 paragraphs or 500 words, for easy readability. One solution is to break long messages into shorter posts, including appropriate subject lines for each. Have no attachments; all text has to be in the body of the posted message web links are ok; If you have a longer report, transcript, or paper to offer, you may want to offer members a summary, with instructions as to where they can request the full information, or include a weblink to the information. You could also send long files to the moderators, who can then archive them in an accessible location. TECHNICAL QUESTIONS Technical questions should be posted to the "Forum Guidelines and Help Section > Help" section of the Forum, or addressed to moderators privately. CROSS-POSTING FROM OTHER LISTS If the content of posts from other lists is relevant to the Forum discussion, cross-posts may be accepted, if permission has been given by the post's original author. If you did not write a post you are submitting, it is your responsibility to get the author's permission.

Dear all, While I appreciate that the first question centres on success stories in mobile telephony, I would appreciate if an overview of what is involved in the whole process, what applications and technologhies are involved were given considering that some of us are coming from underdeloped countries, like Malawi, where although mobile phones are in pocession of everyone, even the rural farmer, their use is restricted to oral communication. I am saying this after going through several contributions which gives the impressions that we are not all using the same wave lenth. Kind regards, Francis Kachala Chancellor College University of Malawi

Thank you, Francis. I will bring this to the attention of the facilitators for tomorrow's discussion. Best, Charlotte

Dear Francis, I think your post is very interesting as the topic of oral communication has been treated and afforded many times, especially while thinking about mobile application that, first of all, are based on the voice. I'd say that "oral communication" does not mean necessarily "poor communication", especially these days when new vocal tools are coming up. For example, India have some very famous vocal services. So I would point that if a vocal service is based on a correct planning before its implementation than its limitations do not prevent it from being effective. I think the attention has to focus on to the process rather than to the product. Anyhow, if you follow the discussion "[url=http://www.e-agriculture.org/550.html?&no_cache=1&view=single_conf&cat_u... 1 - Day 3[/url]", it seems that many people are currently talking about these services. Maybe we can find there some other details on this point. Cheers, Luca (FAO)

Hi Francis, I see the topic we were discussing here is going on also in another thread that you may be interested in following. People are debating on the importance of the content and usability which is very connected to your observation about oral communication.
