Agricultural Value Added Services (Agri VAS): Market Entry Toolkit (3MB)

This document explores the opportunities for Agricultural VAS* and covers emerging best practice on marketing, service design and business modelling. It is primarily addressed to Mobile Network Operators (MNOs), other service providers, and agricultural organisations who are looking to partner and launch Agri VAS.

[*Agricultural Value Added Services (Agri VAS) form part of the Rural VAS portfolio for mobile network operators and VAS providers.]

Case Study: IKSL, India (2MB)

The GSMA mAgri Programme provided a grant and technical assistance to IFFCO Kisan Sanchar Limited (IKSL) in India. IKSL is a joint venture between Indian Farmers Fertiliser Co-operative (IFFCO) & Airtel, the mobile operator with the greatest market share in India. IKSL’s Green SIM card service which offers farmers free daily voice messages and access to a helpline, now has over 1.5 million active users across 18 states in India. CABI manages the content and quality assurance for the service. The IKSL case study examines the service design (push and pull), the content process and challenges, as well as the ICT systems and marketing strategies employed by IKSL.

Case Study: M-Kilimo, Kenya (5MB)

In 2009 the GSMA mAgri Programme helped to set up a farmers’ helpline in Kenya called M-Kilimo. The aim of the project was to test and prove the viability of agricultural value added service products (Agri VAS). The M-Kilimo case study examines the service design (BPO model), how agricultural content was sourced, the challenges and responses to marketing the service and the next steps for reaching scale and sustainability.
