FAO shares the "7 success factors to empowering rural women through ICTs"

The Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations joins the rest of the world in celebrating the International Women's Day 2018. In Rome FAO, joins other Rome Based Agencies (RBAs) on a joint event hosted by IFAD under the theme, "Linked-in: empowering rural women and girls through media and ICTs". This event will showcase  and girls to transform their lives, as a central element in the efforts to eliminate poverty and hunger, and build inclusive and sustainable rural societies.

Additionally, FAO has published the "7 success factors to empowering rural women through ICTs: Using technology to transform lives". The page begins by outlining the opportunities brought about by the adoption of ICTs and thereafter explores the potential that remains untapped by women in ICTs and agriculture. Women tend to be marginalised and have less access to ICTs.

The seven critical factors for success when making ICTs available and accessible to rural communities and especially women were listed as:-

  1. Adapt content so that it is meaningful for them.
  2. Create a safe environment for them to share and learn.
  3. Be gender sensitive.
  4. Provide them with access and tools for sharing.
  5. Build partnerships.
  6. Provide the right blend of technologies.
  7. Ensure sustainability.
