The Ms Swaminathan Research Foundation in association with Qualcomm and the Indian National Centre for Ocean Information Services has been testing a mobile application in local languages for fishermen to track sea conditions. The pilot project introduced the application in 2014 on 18 mobile handset and is now used by about 5000 fishermen in Tamil Nadu and Andhra Pradesh.
The application provides information on weather and ocean conditions, potential fishing zones, disaster alerts and current market prizes of fish. The application warns fishermen when they are crossing the international borders in the sea and there is also a possibility for the application to warn the Coast Guard when the fishermen are in trouble.
The application is now available in four local languages and will be ready to become widely available on the Google Play store in February 2016.
