~~Amparo is a poverty economist and a data innovations expert. She leads the Secretariat of the World Bank Group’s Data Council. She also leads the Open Government Data working group and co-leads the Big Data working group. These are multidisciplinary groups within the World Bank that support developing and emerging countries’ Open Data, Big Data and data innovation initiatives. At the global level, she leads the task team on Big Data for the SDGs.
She has a rich experience in operations since 1991, having managed several investment and budget support projects in various economic areas in the Latin American/Caribbean and Africa regions of the World Bank. Amparo was a manager between 2002 and 2006, when she was the Bank’s Country Manager and Resident Representative in Nicaragua.
Before joining the Bank she worked in public service, academia, diplomatic posts and the private sector. She has held senior Government positions, including Minister of Housing and, subsequently, Chairman of the Board of National Customs of Bolivia.
She obtained a Ph.D. in econometrics and a masters in mathematical economics from Rice University in Houston, Texas.
